G.T. [George Tooker], P.C. [Paul Cadmus], J.F. [Jared French] by M.F. [Margaret French] Wauwinet
4 5/8 x 6 3/4 in (11.75 x 17.15 cm) (image)
PaJaMa was a moniker for an artist collective formed by the combination of the first two letters of the names of artists Paul Cadmus and married artists Jared French and Margaret French. Working in photography, PaJaMa made portraits of their friends, most of whom were young, beautiful and gay and moved in New York’s art, dance and literary circles in the 1930s and 40s. Cadmus and French were openly lovers within the trio. As PaJaMa, the trio staged and photographed evocative nude and seminude figurative tableaus that appear frozen in time, here with the beach landscape of Wauwinet as their background.
